Magnesium L-Threonate's Impact on Students

Today’s students face unique cognitive demands. Between tight academic schedules, constant digital distractions, exam stress, and poor sleep, maintaining focus and memory can feel increasingly difficult. A recent 2026 study published in the American Journal of Applied Medical Science investigated whether targeted nutritional support could address these challenges in students experiencing fatigue and poor concentration. 

The Research

Researchers at Tashkent State Medical University conducted an 8-week study with 30 student volunteers aged 18-25 who reported increased fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Participants were divided into two groups: 20 students received magnesium L-threonate at 2,000mg daily (providing 144mg of elemental magnesium), while 10 students served as a control group. The researchers used standardized cognitive assessments, including the Wexler test and Schulte tables, along with a custom quality-of-life questionnaire designed specifically for students.

Results

The results demonstrated statistically significant improvements in the treatment group. Working speed on the Schulte tables (a standard attention assessment) increased by 22%. Errors on short-term memory tests decreased by an average of 1.8 points. Most importantly, students in the supplementation group showed meaningful academic improvements, with their average performance scores increasing by 0.4 points, whereas the control group showed no significant change.

Beyond cognition, the study revealed quality-of-life improvements. Seventy-eight percent of participants reported improved sleep quality and easier sleep onset. Anxiety before exams decreased by 15% in the treatment group. Additionally, 12% reported improved mood, 8% experienced reduced irritability, and participants demonstrated increased tolerance to physical exertion.
