Magnesium L-Threonates' Impact on Sleep
Does any of the following sound familiar? You lie awake at night despite being exhausted. Your daytime energy crashes. You feel foggy, irritable, and unproductive. This can do more harm than just ruin your day. Poor sleep affects everything, even the immune system. Yet standard solutions often fall short.
A recent randomized controlled trial published in Sleep Medicine: X investigated whether magnesium L-threonate could improve both sleep quality and daytime functioning in adults experiencing sleep problems.
The Research Design
Researchers at Jacksonville University conducted a rigorous 21-day study with 80 adults aged 35-55 who reported self-assessed sleep problems. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 1 gram daily of magnesium L-threonate (about 75mg of bioavailable elemental magnesium) or a placebo.
The study employed both subjective measures through standardized sleep questionnaires and objective measurements using Oura rings, wearable devices that track sleep stages and daytime activity with scientific precision.
Sleep Improvements
The results demonstrated significant improvements across multiple sleep parameters. Using objective Oura ring measurements, magnesium L-threonate helped maintain deep and REM sleep quality relative to placebo, which declined over the study.
Deep sleep is particularly important because it's when your body heals, your brain consolidates memory, and your cognitive function strengthens. Subjective questionnaires showed that participants taking magnesium L-threonate reported improved behavior upon awakening, better sleep quality, and feeling more rested.
Enhanced Daytime Functioning
Beyond sleep itself, magnesium L-threonate benefits for daytime function proved equally impressive. Participants reported significantly improved energy and productivity during the day. Objective measurements showed enhanced activity scores, increased daily movement, and better readiness indicators. Participants also experienced improved mood, reduced grouchiness, better mental alertness, and decreased anger compared to the placebo group.
Fast-Acting Results
One particularly notable finding was that benefits appeared quickly. Participants showed statistically significant improvements within 7-14 days, making this one of the first human studies to document the response timeline for magnesium L-threonate. The supplement was safe and well-tolerated, with minimal adverse events reported.
Supporting Better Sleep and Daytime Performance
The evidence from this rigorous clinical trial supports the link between magnesium L-threonate and sleep. Our Magtein® collection provides the same magnesium L-threonate form used in research, manufactured in the United States with U.S.- sourced and imported ingredients, offering science-backed support for both better sleep and enhanced daytime functioning.
