Magnesium L-Threonate, Memory & Sleep

The Study Design

Researchers conducted a gold-standard randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 100 healthy adults aged 18-45. Half received 2 grams daily of magnesium L-threonate, while the other half received a placebo.

Cognitive function was assessed using the NIH Cognitive Toolbox and Raven's Progressive Matrices. Sleep quality was tracked using Oura Rings, wearable devices measuring objective sleep architecture.

Cognitive Performance Breakthrough

Magnesium L-threonate for cognitive performance and sleep showed striking results. Participants taking the supplement demonstrated greater improvements in overall cognitive performance compared to placebo. The improvements were particularly pronounced in working memory and episodic memory, the types of memory you use daily for focus and recall.

Most remarkably, the cognitive improvements translated into a 7.5-year reduction in estimated brain cognitive age. Reaction time also improved significantly, meaning participants processed information faster and more efficiently. These are meaningful changes in how the brain functions.

Sleep Quality and Restorative Benefits

Magnesium L-threonate demonstrated particular benefits for those experiencing sleep difficulties. Among participants with more severe sleep-related impairment at baseline, the magnesium group showed significantly greater improvements in their sleep-related impairment scores. 

Additionally, heart rate during sleep decreased more substantially in the magnesium group, a physiological marker indicating better sleep quality and stress reduction. Heart rate variability also increased, another objective measure showing improved autonomic nervous system balance during sleep.
