This distinction confuses many buyers. "Elemental magnesium" refers to the actual magnesium content, while the total supplement weight includes the threonate carrier molecule. When comparing supplements, always check elemental magnesium content, not total weight. A 2,000mg serving of L-threonate providing 144mg elemental is standard, while a 500mg serving of glycinate might provide 100mg elemental. They're not directly comparable by weight.

Timing matters for optimal absorption and effects. Most people take magnesium L-threonate in the morning or split between morning and afternoon doses for sustained brain support throughout the day.
